Supporter Spotlight: The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA)
The Anxiety Disorders Association of America works to promote the prevention, treatment, and cure of anxiety and stress-related disorders through advocacy, education, training, and research.
A group of clinicians and patients first founded ADAA in 1980 as the Phobia Society of America. At that time, the term “anxiety disorder” was not yet official. Anxiety disorders were usually referred to as phobias. As researchers found links between panic attacks and abnormal blood flow in the brain, experts realized that anxiety disorders were associated with major social and health consequences. From there, researchers began testing treatment therapies and medications. In 1990, ADAA changed its name to reflect the developing and growing field of anxiety disorders.
Since that time, ADAA has initiated several education campaigns across the country increasing awareness and encouraging people to seek treatment. ADAA has also funded more than $1.5 million in anxiety disorder research.
Today ADAA continues to be the voice for those affected by anxiety and anxiety-related disorders.
